Real-Time MES Integration
Without data, you’re just another person with an opinion.
— W. Edwards Deming
Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) are digital systems that monitor the manufacturing process from the raw material stage to the finished product stage. MES is designed to help production planners improve their processes, it works in real-time to control of every step and element of the manufacturing process.
MES fills the gap between Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and the automation layer. A manufacturing plant has sensors or similar equipment that directly receives machine data from all units within the operation. Data output from machinery and robots in the manufacturing process, can be analyzed with the help of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
At this stage, Manufacturing Execution System (MES) applications come into play in order to make this Big Data obtained from the manufacturing process usable for improvement of the manufacturing process and making managerial decisions.
Data collected from robots and machines including manual labor are organized and stored in a database. These data kept in the database are interpreted with the help of Data Analysts. Big Data obtained and deduced from all stages of the manufacturing process can be monitored simultaneously or retrospectively. This is one of the core functions of real-time MES integration.
Detection of bottlenecks in the manufacturing line is possible by digitally monitoring and managing the process with Manufacturing Execution System applications. MES directly contributes to the improvement of manufacturing and all workflow processes therefore increasing performance and efficiency.
In a scenario of MES integrated system, MES forms the first stage of Digital Twin. The Digital Twin with the data input from MES contains the Virtual Model of the system. The integration of both DT and MES unleashes the potential for attaining data insights of past, present and future from the manufacturing process.
